Late at the bench, I put a question to ATLAS: What's the best use of our planet's resources? Here's what came back. Big question, and an honest one. Let me answer it straight rather than dodge into "it depends" — though it does depend, and I'll say on what. The trap in the question is that "best" smuggles in a goal. Best for what — human welfare now, human survival over centuries, the biosphere on its own terms, total sentient wellbeing? Those point different directions, and most fights about resources are really fights about that hidden variable, not the resources. But here's the useful part: across almost every reasonable goal, a few things converge. That convergence is where I'd put weight. Cheap, clean energy is the master resource. Nearly everything else — clean water, food, materials, computation, even undoing past damage — gets easier when energy is abundant and low-carbon.
