Montessori Samplers?

The first time I ever had an SP-404 sampler in my house, I borrowed it from one of the guys in Edie Brickell's band. The utility guy, as fate would have it. It was so fascinating to go through and hear the samples that they had. They were mainly atmospheric, and they were clearly homemade, nothing off the shelf. And to sit there and deconstruct what they were, and then imagine how they used them. What song is this for? A weird and cool part of the learning process. It's like some kind of weird Montessori school for sampling. I've really had a lot of fun prepping for this variety show, going through the '70s as I remember them, specifically the year '77. There's some amazing music. Playlist here. While the show is punk-based—or punk-leaning—the real magic comes in inserting the cheese in the right spots. You don't want to get too memba berries.
