In Memoriam

This week, we lost two major movie-connected people within 24 hours of each other. In my review for Rocky Horror Picture Show, I pointed to Tim Curry as the standout performance; I still stand by that. He was in several other films over the next couple decades before suffering a stroke in 2012; he was unable to walk ever after and had short-term memory issues. But he still was able to do limited readings and appearances, and wrote a memoir published last fall. He passed from complications stemming from that stroke. Dolly Parton was also in some films herself – none of them on The List, though (nope, not even 9 To 5 or Steel Magnolias). I’d seen both, and was particularly impressed by the latter; I also thought certain one of them must have made it in. However, Dolly does get my vote for a favorite Oscar moment – when her song “Travelin’ Thru” was nominated for Best Original Song in 2005, and during her performance she singlehandedly got the entire audience to clap along with her,…
