Overrated because the specification has a lot of unspecified behavior that makes relying on it quite tumultuous. Even simple tools like echo will behave differently depending on the implementation. Also, most scripts end up targeting bash so that has essentially become the shell scripting specification. Underrated when it comes to using it as an interactive shell. It does baseline line editing. It has emacs mode and vim mode. Completions are unspecified and don’t have other UX features like fish’s auto-suggest, but that also means shells are free to build on top of POSIX to add those features and still be compliant.
