Equanimity and genocide

I recently listened to two completely unrelated Buddhist lectures that involved developing equanimity as an important part of Buddhist ethics. Both were met by Westerners thinking they had the ultimate gotcha question. Obviously, you need to have a strong position on whatever the Current Thing is. And, well, what about genocide? One of the speakers, a Jewish academic, pointed out that even this question was complex and devoid of easy answers on a personal level beyond the obvious point that genocide is bad. The questioner, a middle-aged German woman, clearly was wanting the speaker to go into some sort of Maoist self-criticism spectacle denouncing Israel. She was left disappointed. The more I think about it, the more absurd this question is. There are a dozen odd wars going on, with most completely under the radar of the Western do-gooder.
