The brass wear plate is not really necessary, in the sense of an essential, as the wood can always be replaced for free if it does wear, but that would take a lifetime, and the plane remade from scraps is free and easy anyway. But I like the idea and the thinness of the extended front edge extension. The spalted beech is an ideal wood of free character, but any wood, even a softwood stud, will work anyway.When I made my first router plane, I wanted something inexpensive and simple for anyone to make.
