On Repeat: Flute, Reverb, Remix

On Sundays I try to at least quickly note some of my favorite listening from the week prior — things I would later regret having not written about in more depth, so better to share here briefly than not at all. ▰ I covered the Ambrose Akimusire episode of Bridges, the Jazz at Lincoln Center collaboration with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in the debut Throughline entry in my This Week in Sound email newsletter late last week. In that paragraph, I mentioned the Elena Pinderhughes episode of Bridges, in which the flautist performs in front of (and responds to) Retopistics: A Renegade Excavation, a sizable painting, nearly 9 feet long and a foot and a half tall, by Julie Mehretu. I wanted to draw more attention to it, because it connects with the concept of a graphic score (Mehretu’s work often resembles the visual compositions of mid-20th-century composers like Iannis Xenakis and John Cage), and because she layers her flute with prerecorded elements. ▰ Gorgeous slow motion…
