The Grandma’s Attic series by Arleta Richardson is based on her grandmother’s reminiscences about life growing up on a farm in Michigan during the 1800s. This is the fouth book in the series, and like the first three, it’s a collection of short stories. Usually, the stories are framed as grandmother, Mabel, telling her granddaughter some story about herself or her family when she was young, but in this book, the stories don’t have the framing element of the grandmother talking to her granddaughter. Instead, each story is just Mabel, talking about something that happened when she was young. Many of the stories in this book focus on things that happen at the small local school and lessons that they learn. The books don’t always say exactly how old the children are or what the year is, but the beginning of this book says that the year is 1886, and Mabel and Sarah Jane are thirteen and a half years old.
