Review: Drowning Hour – The Pain of Loss

Review by Sandre the Giant Released: 18th August 2026 The second EP from Shrewsbury-based death/doom band Drowning Hour, ‘The Pain of Loss’, is definitely channelling some Opeth ‘Morningrise’ with that cover art, before I even put the record on to listen. I quite enjoyed their 2025 debut ‘Sanger fra dypet’, and look forward to some more morose heaviness on their new EP. It is out now via Bandcamp. The bleak, cold guitar tone that shimmers beneath a miserable fog and spoken word soliloquy, the guttural roar and the classic early Yorkshire doom riffs that follow, opener ‘Visitation’ is the epitome of gloomy, achingly sad British death/doom that Drowning Hour espouse. There’s a haunting backdrop to vocalist Kieran Scott’s abyssal roar, with weeping guitar casting a sombre veil over something rather visceral and savage. Touches of atmospheric black metal thread the final sections of ‘Longing’, and the clean vocal moments are spine tingling. The lumbering, dragging weight of ‘Inheritance’…
