Everyone wants a glamorous job. This naturally means that a lot of people are willing to compete for it; some people will even do it for free, as a hobby. When people are used to getting something for free, you have to be that much better to get paid for it. Even then, most people won’t be willing to pay a lot. A more useful approach is to pick a problem that a lot of people with a lot of money are willing to pay to solve. Learn to love the problem, not the glamour. For example, writing a book is a glamorous job. It’s probably more precise to call it an organized hobby, like Seth Godin does. Even if your book reaches the New York Times bestseller list, there’s a chance you could be broke. In 999 out of 1,000 parallel universes, you’d be better off applying your writing skills somewhere else instead of writing a book as a career.
