Beryl has the ill fortune to have grown up in a cult of people waiting for their fated monster mate, and while she has no interest in this, even at 35 she’s been poorly prepared for life outside this highly controlled environment. Greid is a monster so desperate for social contact he tries to find a roommate through this cult, not really understanding the amorous nature of the cult’s obsession with his species. Since Beryl is the only one not fawning to an absurd degree, he picks her. Fortunately for both of them, though the cult is wrong about a lot of things about interspecies relationships, our leads turn out to be the exact person the other one needs in their life. Beryl does some very belated but not unsympathetic growing up, and Greid gets laid by someone who likes him and can tell him it’s ok to be kinky. The book is fine.
