Being an expert means knowing what enough looks like. Expertise involves developing a sense of where to look in order to find a solution. Where beginners thrash away or overcorrect, an expert focuses on the solution. They let the impulses of overkill and imaginary barriers pass. They’re calm, because they’ve done this a million times. Beginners feel anxious when they’re confused, but experts know confusion just means they’re on the first step to success. Experts know when a project is not worth pursuing, while identifying portions worth saving in order to make something new. An expert sees opportunities within arm’s reach; there are many simple ways to get started. By not wasting time and energy on overcorrection, or scoping out big solutions when small ones will suffice, experts tend to have a bit more time and energy than they need. Nobody is perfect.
