The Observer‘s Sunday supplement pays homage to Katharine Hamnett in 1985 (Dec 29) Magculture is hosting a talk on 19 September about political T-shirts. ‘Making Trouble: 40 Years of Political Tees’ brings activist designer Katharine Hamnett together with i-D editor Steff Yotka and DJ-come-T-shirt-hustler Jonny Banger. Hamnett’s in-your-face designs with huge, black, sans-serif type on white tees broke new ground and were the craze of 1984. They were picked up everywhere, but particularly as a reaction to the dark side of Thatcherism. Regular readers may have seen my 2020 post about Hamnett’s influence. Nick Logan’s The Face magazine cited her as the most influential designer of 1984 and The Observer newspaper’s Sunday supplement followed suit a year later.
