But I'm trying as best I can to distance myself from Amazon, and their changes to e-books over the years finally pushed me in that direction. Previously, you were able to download books that you had purchased as epubs, or some Amazon-specific e-book format. Then they added DRM, which meant you had to figure out workarounds to crack books you legally owned so you could read them elsewhere (or back them up). Then in the fall of 2025, they removed that ability for you to download your e-books entirely. So I said fuck it, and picked up a Kobo Clara Colour. So far, it's been magnificent. The Kobos let you tinker a bit more, and you can add plugins to them relatively easily. I have 2; one that shows the clock, battery, and both the current page + % progress in the book, as well as one that links directly with Hardcover (my reading tracker of choice) to update my reading progress.
