Thomas chose The Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder for me to write about. You can read about the painting I chose for Thomas, Meindert Hobbema’s Wooden Landscape, on his website.According to Wikipedia, Pieter Bruegel the Elder painted the Tower of Babel three times. Of the three paintings, two remain. For this challenge, I am writing about the painting held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. While doing research, I also learned that Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s son, Pieter Bruegel the Younger, also painted the Tower of Babel. (The Younger painted copies of some of his father’s work.) In doing research, I found a record of sale of the Younger’s painting at Christies in 2022.Bruegel the Elder’s painting depicts The Tower of Babel being built, a building in Genesis 11:1-9.
