For most of my life, I thought the sound effect of crickets playing was just that - a sound effect. Something that they put in movies and tv shows to cue awkward silence. Not something that really occurred in real life. Living in a more northern climate, crickets weren't something I'd ever encountered. One summer in my late 20s, I visited Utah. In the evening, the sound of the crickets would fill the air. And not just one cricket, like the sound effects. A whole chorus of sound that filled the air! I'd never experienced anything like it before. I was amazed at just how loud it could be. I could even hear it through the closed window sometimes. It was such a novelty, now the sound of crickets is quite strongly associated to that time I spent in Utah. I'm sure others who hear it more regularly might not realize the novelty it was to me, or even consider it to be a nuisance. I fine the sound of crickets very comforting. 11/100 reply by email
