Armchair Theatre: The Cherry On The Top

In 2017, Forgotten Television Drama launched a series of DVDs in conjunction with the DVD distributor Network. Following the untimely death of Network’s Managing Director Tim Beddows and the subsequent closure of the company, we are now making available all the viewing notes that accompanied our releases. The Cherry On The Top (Armchair Theatre, ABC, 27 September 1964). Written by Donald Churchill, produced by Leonard White and directed by Guy Verney. The Cherry on the Top, the opening play of Armchair Theatre’s Autumn 1964 season, is a good example of producer Leonard White’s intention to regularly include comic plays in the series repertory alongside more serious and demanding material. The play was written by Armchair Theatre’s most prolific author, Donald Churchill (1930-91), whose reliability and popularity with audiences resulted in 14 plays for the series between 1962 and 1973.
