Having already encountered TheatreGoose’s take on 1605 elsewhere in the festival, it is striking to find another company returning to exactly the same historical event. The approaches could hardly be more different. Where TheatreGoose used the Gunpowder Plot to explore participation, power and political process, WIT? Theatre Company turn it into a gloriously camp comedy musical. Yet both productions are ultimately asking similar questions. Who gets remembered? Who gets forgotten? And who gets to write the version of history that survives? Those questions sit at the heart of Remember, Remember!. The show’s central joke is that Robert Catesby, not Guy Fawkes, was the real architect of the Gunpowder Plot. History, however, had other ideas. While Catesby disappears into obscurity, Fawkes becomes the face on posters, masks and bonfires.
