I think Sheffield might be my new favourite city. It’s managed to become cool without ruining itself in the process, refusing to polish away the bits that make it interesting whilst building a city that feels lived in rather than curated. There is also an impressive amount of great food and drinks for a city that once made its money turning metal into things. Independent restaurants, good pubs, hidden wine bars, proper bakeries and the sort of places where someone has decided that a 200-year-old industrial building would make an excellent dining room. Sheffield doesn’t seem particularly interested in convincing the rest of the country that it is important. It is far too busy getting on with being Sheffield. The only problem is getting anywhere. Everything is either up a hill, down a hill or at the top of a hill you were assured was just round the corner. Locals give directions in gradients rather than miles: go up there, past that pub, then down a bit, then up again. You arrive at…
