Analog I deeply appreciate stationery and its constituent processes, accoutrements, and instruments. I am a frequent user of these products and sell them for a living. I don’t, however, align myself with the use of the term “analog” to describe these items. I assume it started with a need to distinguish these items from digital applications that came to substitute their own processes and use for the original non-digital ones. This evolution brings a contradictory truth to bear: the so-called digital process is, in fact the analogous one as it attempts to mimic or reproduce the original. Audio recording, from which I believe the current use comes, was originally referred to as analog because it reproduced (re-corded) a live event or performance. The subsequent distinction between digital and analog had simply to do with the extent to which recordings were made with or without computer — digital — intervention.
