Fascinating.

While I was out storm chasing yesterday, I fired up my wardriving setup. ThinkPad T460s running Linux sitting on the passenger seat of the Jeep. As I watched the data scroll by with each glance, I was surprised at the number of rural households that name their Wi-Fi networks after their last name. There were a few that named their networks after their last name + their house number or some other identifying feature. This makes this location that much more susceptible to social engineering. I was having a conversation with a geeky friend last night and we got to talking about a few folks with unusual spellings for their names. I mentioned I have always found this unfortunate; spelling your child’s name with a unique spelling makes it that much easier to find their whereabouts online in this day of everything connected to the everyone. It’s much easier to find “Tifini Smith” versus “Tiffany Smith” in even a medium sized city. Wardriving is the passive act of just identifying…
