My first le Carré, and his writing is as good as his reputation. I rarely read thrillers but decided to see what all his fuss was about. I’ve seen the film of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and was in too summery a mood for a grim depressing cold war trudge, so I picked up this grim depressing african trudge. Actually apart from the grim story of exploitation of africa’s destitute by multinational Big Pharma it was a good romp rather than a trudge. The story is about the murder of a british diplomat’s wife in nairobi, and the subsequent adventures of her husband in trying to find the culprit and the british police/foreign office/mi6/big pharma villains trying to find him. Very good! Maybe I’ll watch the film – it looks like it has an incredible cast!
