Emoticons before computers and mobiles

. Fry’s advertising emoticons from before WWI in 1914 Lovely set of what are these days called emoticons and litter our online messages. They date from a Fry’s Chocolate advert in a 1914 issue of London Opinion magazine (general weekly best known as the instigator of the Kitchener Needs You poster). And here’s another one below, set within the letterpress of a 1930 issue of SMT, a monthly magazine for road and rail travellers in Scotland. This will have had to be made from scratch as a special character within a foundry. Quite a feat. Letterpress emoticon within SMT magazine text SMT was published by the Scottish Motor Traction Company, 41 George St, Edinburgh.
