Review: Aenigmatum – Infinitude’s Passage

Review by Sandre the Giant Released: 31st July 2026 It has been a long five years since the last record, 2021’s ‘Deconsecrate’, from Portland Oregon’s progressive black/death metal kingpins Aenigmatum. Well, kingpins when they are actually around! That’s pretty unfair I admit, but it was more than a pleasant surprise to see the venerable 20 Buck Spin just drop this out of the sky with no warning at the end of last month. Well, I’ve had some time to sit and stew in the progressive black/death metal of this album, and man it really feels like it was worth every minute we waited… Imagine just shadow dropping an album like this out of nowhere? But if anything, it gives us all a chance to experience the magnificence of Aenigmatum’s complex and multilayered sound without the preconception of an advanced single, and opener ‘Pitiless Mechanism’ is a wonderfully atmospheric work of progressive death metal, in the vein of Cynic or Atheist.
