"War Diary" by Ingeborg Bachmann

This book is edited by Hans Höller, and translated from German into English by Mike Mitchell. This is a non-fiction book with maybe a bit of a misleading title. It consists of three parts. The first is a war diary, the second is a collection of letters and the third is an afterword. The diary is written by Ingeborg Bachmann, who lived on to become a famous Austrian author. I'd never heard of her before, which I'll have to remedy by reading some of her fiction soon. This part of the book is super interesting, written when the author was around 18 years old. It chronicles some of the last few days of WW2 in Austria and some of the period after the British army has arrived. Bachmann's parents were Nazis, but she herself was mostly trying to avoid their influence and other drastic responsibilities forced upon her. I think the way she reflects on the adults around her, despite being raised in these circumstances, is fascinating. I'm quite sad this diary part was only about 30 pages! The…
