Nuns! – Assembly ★★★★

Some comedy arrives dressed in sophistication. Nuns! bursts through the convent doors wearing a fake beard, a questionable habit and the sort of manic energy usually associated with children who’ve consumed too much birthday cake. Thank goodness for that. Dog Complex Theatre’s medieval romp is delightfully lo-fi narrative sketch comedy, the kind of show that feels beamed in from an alternative 1990s where Channel 4 accidentally commissioned a troupe of exceptionally talented idiots and ended up with a cult classic. If it had appeared three decades ago, it would probably still be repeated at midnight and quoted by students after the pub. Set in a Bavaria overflowing with witches, lustful thoughts and deeply questionable religious leadership, the plot follows the increasingly chaotic adventures of Sister Gertrude and Yarrow. To describe the story in too much detail would be rather like describing the route a pinball takes around a machine. The joy comes from watching it ricochet wildly…
