Read the full post at - The Individuals Who Championed Each National Park Over the past few years, I’ve been able to visit a few of America’s National Parks, Wildlife Refuges, and other public lands in addition to reading several excellent histories. For the Parks that I’ve visited so far, it seemed like there was an outsize influence of either single individuals or small groups in getting the Park established. I went digging to see if this was a common pattern or just a one-off. It turns out to be surprisingly common. I went on a deep Wikipedia rabbit hole and then organized a full list with help of Claude & Google Sheets. For each park below: the single individual who, more than anyone, kept the cause at the forefront for years or decades – often as their life’s work (or nagging obsession, depending on your viewpoint). Where a park was genuinely a group, legislative, or Park Service administrative creation with no one obsessive standard-bearer, the champion column is left blank (—)…
