Avoiding the Queen loaded phrasing of the question, I found myself wondering what breaking free actually feels like. As a completely unrepressed white male, the only things I’ve ever really broken free from were of my own making and tend to be accompanied with as much shame —that I got myself into that situation— as elation at being out of it. Which neatly takes me back to my childhood, hours spent in the local church, youth clubs, Boys Brigade, not to mention the weekly service. I was involved with Scripture Union too, went to camps, read the bible, and enjoyed every minute of the camaraderie and sense of belonging to something that religion is so good at giving us. Only problem was I didn’t believe in God. As I grew older, and the devil dragged me closer to his clutches, music became my spiritual focus. No other art form grabs me…
