Oral gore is hard for me and so this hard me tearing at my stomach at points, but I got most sick and teary-eyed at Sally Hawkins's monologue about losing her daughter and the self-torture of wanting her back. It's funny: often you think that fear is strongest for the unknown, the things you imagine but haven't touched. But I'm finding that as I get more life experiences, and uncover some of the unknowns, I open up whole new worlds of terror in how they can be lost. I really wish Sally's character had been not-immediately-obviously-a-baddie. Like, she could have been nice for at least a bit and then turned in the night of the pissing. As it was, the kids should have left immediately after the stuffed dog trick. Speaking of which, I really wish the sister had more agency. Her blindness was used too much as a prop for the audience to see hands-in-blood and she was too smart (at least, initially) to naively stay with Sally. I hope I never need to find a codeword for "tell me the truth"…
