I seem to have spent a lot of time recently involved in books which deal with the horrors of the 20th century; maybe it’s a reaction to what’s happening in our current world where it seems that the human race hasn’t moved on at all since then. Today’s book is a title I’ve had on the TBR in one form or another for a good number of years and have got close to reading several times – “Into the Whirlwind” by Natalia Ginzburg, translated by Paul Stevenson and Manya Harari. As Simon commented on my end of July post, I own two copies of this book so there really isn’t any excuse not to get to it for Women in Translation month; as a Virago-adjacent publisher (Persephone), it also counts for All Virago/All August. Born in Moscow in 1904, Ginzburg and her family moved to Kazan in 1909. Here, she studied, became a teacher and was a loyal, card carrying member of the Communist party, supporting Soviet society.
