This is a Blaugust 2026 blog post. The world-wide HTML Day celebration happened this past weekend. Now in its fourth year, the organizers describe it as: HTML Day is an annual celebration of HTML. It's a day to gather IRL in places around the world to write and learn HTML. For the second consecutive year, Portland has participated with its own event. I joined in – and I made an HTML! The event was at ADX (Art Design Exchange). It was sponsored by Computers Like Portland, which also hosts periodic “Web Day” events. About sixteen people showed up. That was not a bad turnout, considering it was an excessive heat day, the area was still recovering from massive wildfire smoke, and there were many competing events — including the storied Lloyd Mall closure. Days before the event, I cast about for an idea of what to do. I wanted to create a web page that was lo-fi and low tech – kind of old school HTML – but I was at a loss.
