The Lewes pound

The Lewes pound was a local currency in the town of Lewes in East Sussex. It was introduced in 2008, but was discontinued in 2025 due to the growth of cashless payments and a general lack of interest. The Lewes Pound was fixed at £1 (GBP) and was usable in around 100 shops as of 2023. It was the last surviving local currency in the UK at the time of discontinuation. Bank notes (above) featured a picture of the South Downs and Thomas Paine, one of the US’s “Founding Fathers”, on the front and a picture of Lewes Castle on the back.
