Treating them as though if I have that latest pen, a different brand of paint or the latest iPad, I’ll be able to create so much better. Deep down, I know it’s not true. I know I have to learn the basics, have them become so ingrained that there is no real difference in the tools towards the quality of my work. If you look at my art page, you’ll see that I focus on two things, abstract pieces and typography. Despite this, I still create far more pieces that I hate than what I think have any sort of potential. This is because I still refuse to practice the basics. The importance of shape and composition with the art and the importance of proper construction of letters. The sad part is that I avoid learning because it’s boring, but it’s the boring bit that makes all the difference.
