The approach basically says “no roads in areas that currently have no roads.” It’s been a win-win-win for fiscal conservatives (who don’t want to spend money maintaining thousands of miles of remote roads); environmentalists (who want less development on Federal lands); and USFS managers (who want less wildland fire risk, clear management objectives, and more money to spend on high-impact programs). It’s wonky and weird. But it’s critical for how Americans use & experience the public lands we all love.
