Notations 21 Theresa Sauer Notations 21 presents a really interesting collection of graphical notation presented with and without commentary, as well as essays on the topic. I’ve poked around it a few times at work on slow days, and this note is mostly an attempt to collect thoughts on the essays and the work as a whole. It stands as a really interesting capsule of interpretations on the postmodern atomic age, as viewed through the optimism of the neoliberal “global village” years of the onset of the information age. This creates a tension between the desire for taxonomy and the collapse of objectivity. I love books like this that collect disparate thoughts within an aesthetic context, as they reveal a lot of the dominant artistic perspectives in this period. Yet in every way this book attempts to reject standardization, and so looking at works will probably take different forms.
