Keyboard mania

This is not a photographic post, but I consider it photography-adajcent, since all us digital photographers use keyboards. I’ve been spending way more time messing with keyboards than makes any sense. You could say that it’s become a compulsion. Keyboards have been important to me since the IBM PC first came out with the Selectric-typewriter-like collapsing disk mechanical switches. Before that I’d struggled with the abysmal ASR-33 Teletype keyboards, a bunch of glass TTYs, and the Apple II keyboard. They varied from adequate to nearly intolerable, but I never thought about the fact that you might be able to have a really nice keyboard on a personal computer. The original IBM PC keyboard was lovely by the standards of the day, and my guess is that it would still be a nice keyboard today. It was tactile, with over-center action that was delicious. It was built like a tank. It made typing a pleasure. For years, I used that keyboard and its descendants. The IBM folks in Lexington sure…
