I remember that only because I still shot only film then, and I turned my camera’s date function on for this trip thinking I’d be glad someday. (I was/am.) That trip was along the National Road in western Indiana, and was the first time I drove the road you see in the photo above 20 years and two days later, I revisited several places on the National Road between Indianapolis and Terre Haute, including this spot. It was a nice way to honor my 20 years of exploring the old roads and trying to make sense of their histories. I’ve explored the old road these 20 years almost entirely because it is so darned pleasant, and sometimes even exciting.
