pick a lane

I believe the worst thing we've ever been told as creatives is that we have to 'pick a niche'. You have to optimise and focus on that one group of people... Your group of people, like there's this magical circle of people waiting for your creativity to welcome you into their exclusive club. Visibility is important. I understand that and you want people to care about your work, I understand that too. But picking a lane is the most disgusting advice to have ever come into the creative space. And it's everywhere. Oh you need to have a set 'style' for your art, you need to only write about a certain topic, you need to make sure you provide value and then make it as simple as possible because nobody can spend more than 30 seconds on any one thing now. The sad thing about this isn't that picking a lane means you find your tribe, it leads to you finding indifference in your work.
