The retro handheld scene has never just been about the hardware. Every new device arrives with a community behind it: developers refining who refine (or more accurately perhaps: re-imagine) the software, creators showing people what it's capable of, reviewers putting it through its paces, and enthusiasts finding new ways to push it beyond what anyone expected. Over the years, many of those names have become just as familiar as the handhelds themselves.
