The retro handheld scene has never just been about the hardware. Every new device arrives with a community behind it: developers refining who refine (or more accurately perhaps: re-imagine) the software, creators showing people what it's capable of, reviewers putting it through its paces, and enthusiasts finding new ways to push it beyond what anyone expected. Over the years, many of those names have become just as familiar as the handhelds themselves. With this new series of articles I’m starting, I wanted to turn the spotlight onto those people and the handhelds that shaped them.Each feature will take a closer look at someone whose work has helped shape the handheld community, exploring not only the projects they're known for, but also their own journey with one specific manufacturer.
