Holy crap, first I am doing book reviews and now I have an AI tag on the blog, what is happening here?! I recently read a pretty scathing take-down of the current state of AI in the enterprise (and beyond): AI Mania Is Eviscerating Global Decision-Making. I'm not going to summarize it here but do urge you to give it a read. While I don't agree with all of it, there are a lot of good observations. The one I wanted to share my thoughts on was this quote: Frequently the failure is not related to AI itself, but rather that companies are terminally bad at running software projects effectively, and as I have remarked previously, AI projects are subject to all the failure modes of normal projects plus you can get everything right and then still fail because of the method's novelty. Very few companies are so good at shipping software that they can afford the extra risk profile.
