This week had some desultory work on various projects, a bit of reading, and some travel. I’m working to adjust my expectations in terms of what I can and need to get done before the start of the fall semester. My classes are mostly set up even if I’ve not quite figured out all the content and assignments. Anyway, my listening was interrupted and inconsistent. Since I was heading toward North Carolina, I had to enjoy some Coltrane (plus, it’s his centennial and I’d be remiss). For whatever reason, I wanted to listen to Blue Train (1958); maybe it was a bit of a Lee Morgan hang over. Whatever the deal, the album is spectacular and feel vibrant and alive. It hints and things to come even if it doesn’t quite realize them yet. For some reason I stumbled on some Charles Brackeen and that drew me to Paul Motian’s 1977 trio recording Dance featuring Brackeen on sax and David Izenzon on bass.
