That’s a solid goal whenever you’re starting out. If you’re early in your career, find three freelance clients. That helps you kickstart your portfolio, which helps you demonstrate your expertise, and strengthens your position in the marketplace. Happy clients will refer you to new clients or serve as references. In my junior year in university, I started writing for a publication called Techvibes. (I wasn’t very good yet! But it was very useful.) My friend Keane saw this and saw an opportunity for me to work at Xtreme Labs. I worked there three days a week. How I found my first three freelance clients, outside of that: One cold emailed me after reading a guest post I wrote. One I was a fan of and had unsuccessfully applied for an internship with. After I bought one of their products, they responded on email. We talked on the phone, I came up with lots of ideas and pitched. Some of those ideas became projects.
