Boring software

Over the years, I’ve come to a realisation: I like boring software. What do I mean by that? The most important thing for me in computing is reliability, for lots of people, that’s boring. I don’t care about flashy features any more, I want the thing I take notes every day in to just work. Same with my OS. I went from customizing old versions of Windows, to over-riced Linux desktops, to basically Fedora on all defaults (except wallpaper). I don’t want my software to suddenly start talking to me, I just want it to do the thing I installed it for. Recently, this has generated lots of frustration for me, with most notably GitHub becoming the most unreliable website people have to rely on. The website has frequent outages nowadays, doubled by the quasi-nonexistent improvements of features beyond the “Copilot” LLM slop generator and just breakages that would have never happened, had the changes they pushed been tested properly.
