But, critically, the Treaty of Paris — granting independence to the new nation of former colonies — was not signed until Sept. 3, 1783. Almost three more months passed before the last British troops left from the port of New York City on Nov 25, 1783. I was checking my backlinks on Ahrefs when I saw one from the Chicago Sun Times. I do not recall having had a Chicago Sun Times backlink, so I checked to see what it was about. On July 1, 2026, the paper published America 250-inspired letters to the editor. One of these letters, from Harvey J.
