Since my contracts wrapped up at the end of June, I’ve been using some of my suddenly free time to walk more. My part of town is technically walkable, but walking anywhere involves a busy four-lane artery and no shade on hot days. Fortunately, my part of town has a couple of fantastic parks with trails. One of them is Holliday Park. It was once the estate of John Holliday, a publisher of the former Indianapolis News newspaper. Indianapolis is a pretty flat place overall, but there’s a deep ravine in Holliday Park around which the trail system was built. It also lets you reach the White River. It’s a remarkable thing to have in the city. Here I’m walking from near one of the trailheads down into the ravine along the river. Here I’m walking Trail 6, starting to head uphill. And here I’m walking the end of Trail 8 toward another trailhead. It passes under the Meridian Street bridge over the White River. It feels almost dystopian to come upon it. When I walk I try to let my brain just go…
