Friends in Generative Places

Among the many nice things about the internet is when your friends — IRL ones, and internet ones, not to mention people you don’t know in the slightest — send you things from afar: sounds, photographs, videos. I’ve received in recent months via text message and DM and email (1) an audio recording of a dripping drain and (2) of a refrigerator’s drone, (3) street photography of graffiti and (4) snapshots of user interfaces, and (5) footage of sound art and (6) of natural phenomena. My friend Lowell Goss just went to the Céleste Boursier-Mougenot exhibit, Clinamen, at the Park Avenue Armory, and he texted me some short videos of the work, in which dozens of ceramic bowls gently knock into each other in massive pools of water, resulting in an ongoing generative — in the newly old-school sense of the word — sonic environment.
