Birdcall: A one-page horror screenplay

For the heck of it, I decided to whip together a submission for the Killer Shorts one-page horror script competition. Since the actual text might not see the light of day unless it's a finalist or winning entry, I wanted to archive it here for anybody who might like to read it. Presenting, for your enjoyment... BIRDCALL EXT. FOREST - DAY Scattered BIRDSONG trickles from the dense canopy overhead. Below, JUSTIN and ASHLEY tiptoe among the leaves. Their mutual shy affection suggests a first date with high hopes. Both carry BINOCULARS; Justin totes a BIRDWATCHING MANUAL. Binoculars raised, Ashley scans the treetops. She spies something that makes her break into a big grin. Beckoning Justin over, she points to a high branch. ASHLEY See that? That's a mockingbird. It mimics the sounds it hears. Possibly to scare off whatever made them. Justin's lifted binoculars hold the tirelessly singing MOCKINGBIRD in their sights. The couple listens, rapt, as the bird's call changes. JUSTIN So what's…
