Especially as a man, this has finally allowed me to work through a shitload of issues—or I’m still in the process of doing so. Throughout the entire process of being a father, this is only possible if you don’t shy away from looking inward and examining the truth of your concepts and beliefs. Spoiler: Most of it is complete bullshit. Or at least outdated nonsense. To the fathers who aren’t already on this path: Get rid of what doesn’t belong there; reflect, then keep what works for you, and dump the rest. Talk about it. It’s also true, however, that nothing in this life has pushed me to the brink of total breakdown as much or as often as these two young people have. Both sides deserve to be voiced. Both are valid.
