Just finished “The Phoenix Project” and the idea that stuck with me is Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints. Every system has one bottleneck, and any improvement made anywhere else is a mirage. Find your constraint, protect it, and stop congratulating yourself for optimizing things that were never the problem. Once you see work this way, you can’t unsee it. My gripe is the same one I have with most business books about software: the craft disappears. Development gets flattened into “work centers” and widgets. Good code involves taste, judgment, and a bit of artistry, and none of that survives the factory metaphor. Personally I’d rather craft Ferarris than build Fiats.
