Re: bars/pubs/clubs

Just saw Rei’s post bars/pubs/clubs on the recent tab and it made me chuckle. I’m almost 46, so those heady teenage days are long behind me. Here in the UK, we have a reputation when it comes to booze. We stereotypically binge drink and then bad behaviour usually follows - if any type of sport is happening at the same time (largely football!), then multiply that by 10. Over in mainland Europe, they have a more mature attitude to alcohol, along with more refined tastes. Wine instead of beer. Which just so happens to be my preference too. I do think a lot of how we approach alcohol comes down to how we perceive it growing up and how taboo it is. In the UK, you’re not supposed to drink until you’re 18 and for many young teens that’s alluring in itself. Despite being born and bred British, I seem to have grown up with a more European attitude to alcohol.
